Clueless-30 Years Later Random Thoughts

Today marks 30 years of Clueless starring Alicia Silverstone, Stacey Dash, and the late Brittany Murphy. The film is a classic, one of the best teen movies and arguably the best and most influential teen movie of the 1990's. A case definitely could be made for American Pie, and maybe She's All That, but neither are as influential as this movie.

In celebration I decided to watch the movie for the 10,000th time, and offer 30 random thoughts on it.

1. Rich or not, the opening montage really gave a 9 year old kid, a false sense of how my teen years would be.

2. Cher picking her outfit for the day through the power of her computer, was ahead of its time.

3. Dionne's intro attire is still iconic. It's a Halloween staple, my wife and I plan to dress up as Dionne and Murray one year. She will be wearing that dress.

4. It was clever for the Christian character to be introduced via word of mouth. Before we actually got to see him, it seemed like a throwaway line but was brilliant.

5. Who would have thought 20 years later, the slacker step-brother would be saving the world with an ant army.

6. The joke of everyone reaching for their cell phone at the dinner table, didnt age too well.

7. When you think about it, Cher was very resourceful and cunning at 15 years old. I wish I had the negotiation skills at that age, hell even now.

8. Tai's introduction to her fellow classmates is very real. People just stare at you and never say hello these days.

9. Maybe its a Hollywood trope, maybe its a cultural thing. Maybe I didnt care enough in school. My high school experience did not involve alot of "cliques".

10. All these years later, I've never figured out if Dionne just tolerated Tai but couldnt stand some of her quirks. Or she really didn't like her.

11. No matter what role he's in, Jeremy Sisto will always be Elton to me.

12. I shouldnt have known this as a 9 year old, but it took me a few years to realize Travis was a pothead.

13. It's evident the character Summer was apart of Cher's circle. I feel like she was involved more in the film in previous drafts, but when edits and cuts needed to be made. That role was minimized.

14. On that note, Amber was simply a major antagonist in the film. Not even an antagonist, she was just competition for Cher. I'm glad she got some character development in the TV series.

15. I don't know much about The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, couldn't name 5 songs of theirs. When they are playing Someday I Suppose, I wanted to be at that party.

16. The freeway scene definitely played in my head when I first learned to drive, and getting on the highway came up.

17. Speaking of Dionne and Murray were a hilarious couple. In a random, where are those characters now moment? I wonder how many kids they have and if they still bicker all the time?

18. Tai's sudden popularity and personality change, definitely took plot points from 1987's Can't Buy Me Love.

19. Though the scene and joke is meant to show how much Cher lives in her bubble, The "I am not a Mexican" line would not fly today.

20. When it comes to words that cut deep, Tai's most famous line is classic.

21. Never noticed Cher was drinking Starbucks, which probably was no more than 5 years old at that point. Again, ahead of it's time.

22. Also, amazing how once Cher and Tai become friends again. She's already plotting that Tai no longer is interested in Josh.

23.Although they are not blood related, I still will never understand how Cher and Josh becoming a couple was approved throughout the entire filmmaking process.

24. Not only that, Josh is a college student but it's never really confirmed how old he actually is. Did anyone think of these things?

25. I never realized until now that Ms. Geist and Mr. Hall's wedding was probably at Cher's house.

26. Lucy the housekeeper waiting for the bouquet to be thrown, in her work attire caught my eye, and made me go hmmmm.

27. I wonder how much Cher's dad charged them to have at their home.

28.Tenderness by the duo General Public was about 10 years old when it played over the end credits. It still hits all these years later.

29. Twink Caplan who played Ms. Geist was an associate producer on the film, and an executive producer on the spin-off TV show. Hot damn she was Kristie Alley's best friend in Look Who's Talking 1 and 2.  Random things you learn.

30. Speaking of the TV show, it ran for three seasons from 1996-1999 first on ABC and then UPN. While not a great series it helped build the world and lore the film had set, and Tubi or Pluto need to grab the rights to it.

5 Nintendo Video Games Ready For Hollywood

Nintendo is going full steam ahead on making movies for their IP's, after the success of Super Mario Bros. in 2023. A sequel is due next year with a Legend Of Zelda movie due in 2027. And Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa hinting at more movies on the horizon.

Now news has leaked that a Donkey Kong movie is in the works. With three of Nintendo's biggest properties prime for movies. I decided to take a look at 5 other popular Nintendo characters/franchises that could warrant a movie.

F-Zero

F-Zero was a series of racing games, where the vehicles hovered instead of being on road tools. So throw in some cool well designed hover cars, and set the races across different planets like the game. There is a potential gold mine on the horizon.

Now racing movies can be very bland and feel unnecessary. So proper story and character development would have to be done. It could work though to revive the brand for a new generation.

Bowser aka King Koopa

The Donkey Kong movie will be a spin-off of Mario Bros. So it would only be right to continue the Mario Bros movie-verse, with a spin-off for Bowser. Hollywood loves a good origin story for villains, explaining how they got to be devious and diabolical. Let's see how Bowser became King Koopa.

Star Fox

I'll admit I don't remember hearing of StarFox until the game was released on Nintendo 64. Apparently the franchise dates back to Super Nintendo in 1993 with the last release in 2017. With a plot that's prime for a animated movie.

Following an anthropomorphic fox named Fox McCloud an fighter pilot in outer space. Alongside his team made up of different species they set out to save the Lylat galaxy and prevent a war.

Kirby

Kirby maybe considered the "cute" mascot of Nintendo characters. He's probably the companies second most known character behind the Mario Bros. Kirby can shape shift and express different emotions. Going from cuddly to fierce in a blink of a eye.

His ability to inhale enemies and objects creates opportunity to funny visuals. Perfect fodder for a movie that could cater to younger fans.

Metroid

Metroid walked so Halo could run. The first game was released in 1986 on Nintendo. It follows a galactic bounty hunter named Samus Aran battling a destructive species called Metroids. At the same time fending off other forces who want to use the Metroids abilities to make weapons.

With elements like Mario Bros and Zelda, Metroid is prime for an action adventure film. Let's get to it.

Movies For Guys Who Like Movies: Streaming Edition

In the late 90's and early 2000's when cable ruled the media landscape, TBS use to run a movie block called Movies For Guys who like Movies. Movies played during this block were often action movies, high octane, high adrenaline and outside a rerun of a major Hollywood blockbuster. They were often B-level and cult classic movies as well, so I decided to take the concept and bring it to the streaming world.

Here are 5 action filled B Movies streaming right now, if you want to watch some non sense action movies.

Aftermath

This 2024 movie currently airing on Netflix stars Dylan Sprouse, of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody all grown up. He plays an ex-Army ranger who must save the day, when the Tobin Memorial bridge is overtaken by radicals with a mission.

It definitely has the DNA of films like Die Hard and Under Siege. For a straight to streaming film has some solid action scenes.

The Tax Collector

This 2020 film starring Shia LaBeouf got caught up in the pandemic. Shia plays a "tax collector" basically an enforcer for a crime boss alongside his best friend played by Bobby Soto. When their crime boss business is in jeopardy, he senses a double cross. Well someone has to pay the price, and Cueva's played by Bobby Soto family is the target.

Written and directed by David Ayer who wrote films like Training Day, Dark Blue, the OG Fast and Furious, and End Of Watch. While this film may not be on the same level as those films, you definitely see similar DNA. It's worth the watch and is available on Hulu.

Havoc

Another Netflix film, this one starts with a bang and never ever slows down. It stars Tom Hardy as a police detective caught up in the middle of a war between criminal organizations. As he gets in the mix, he runs into corruption and political conspiracy.

Think of the movie Crank and how it never slows down. Mixed with a plot along the lines of Street Kings and its that this film. Non stop action amidst the corruption.

Boss Level

Another movie that was lost in the midst of the pandemic, released in March of 2021. This Hulu original stars Frank Grillo and Mel Gibson, that throws you for a loop. A time loop at that, imagine Groundhog Day but action packed. Grillo is a former delta force soldier, who everyday is thrawting an assassination attempt on his life. He continually repeats the cycle, until he searches to break it.

A modern crime drama with some sci-fi mixed in. It has action and suspense and for a straight to streaming movie, keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Heads Of State

This prime video original just released earlier this month. It stars John Cena as a former movie star who is now President of the United States. And Idris Elba who is the United Kingdom's prime minister. While the two don't get along, they must team together on the run after an assassination attempt on their lives. They must team up with a MI6 agent played by Priyanka Jonas to save the day.

It's absurd and silly, funny and has some good action scenes. Give it a chance, you won't be disappointed.

5 underrated time travel movies

Today is the 40th anniversary of one of my favorite movies ever, Back To The Future. I can't say enough good things about the first film and the franchise.

While I get ready to pop my popcorn and watch the film like I've never seen it. And the concept of time travel, here are 5 underrated time travel films. While some of these are considered well liked films, they just do not get the credit they deserve. Away we go!

Totally Killer

This 2023 Amazon original, produced by the modern day horror guru in Jason Blum. Follows a young lady named Jamie, when her mom is murdered by a figure very similar to a mass murderer in town 30 plus years ago. In the process she has access to a newly built home made time machine, and accidentally sends herself back to 1987.

There, she works to change the events of the past to save her future. It's campy almost B-movie quality, and 100 % 80's culture and horror inspired. It's also a mindless good time.

Frequency

This 2000 film starring Dennis Quaid and Jim Cavaziel, follows the two as a father and son Frank and John Sullivan communicating across time. That's right through the power of a ham radio, the two communicate in 1969 and 1999 respectively. When John helps his father prevent a mishap in the original timeline.

The butterfly effect comes into play, and other things that were supposed to happen did not. The two then must collaborate across time to fix some of those mistakes, while making sure everyone is happy without giving too much away.

The Adam Project

This 2022 Netflix film stars Ryan Reynolds as a fighter pilot in the year 2050. He uses time travel with the intention of heading to 2018, but crash lands in 2022. There he meets his 12 year old self who is going through a rough time in his life.

Together the two team together to heal and thrawt an assassination attempt on his future wife. The movie pays homage to several 80's films and has some good action, but can be clunky at times and was given a bad rap.

Men In Black 3

After 2002's absymal Men In Black 2 all seemed lost for the franchise. 10 years though they righted the ship of Men In Black. This 2012 film follows Will Smith's Agent J traveling back in time, to save Agent K from an assassination.

Traveling to 1969 he interacts with a younger Agent K, played by Josh Brolin. Brolin does a perfect dead pan impersonation of Tommy Lee Jones. The film has some emotional moments to go along with the laughs, and action scenes. It's use of time travel makes sense as well, and doesnt over complicate it.

See You Yesterday

Released in 2019 and produced by Spike Lee, See You Yesterday was timely and dare I say ahead of it's time. The film follows a teen science prodigy who invents a time machine via a backpack (damn good time travel device by the way).

When her brother is killed by overzealous police, she uses the device to go back in time to save him. Always ending up in a endless loop that changes the situation. She learns the harsh lesson of messing with time and fate in the process.

Five Of The Best Time Travel Devices

This week mark's 40 years of the first Back To The Future movie, featuring one of the most beloved time travel devices in film ever. The 1980's "cool" car a DeLorean with the gullwing doors, transformed into a time machine by one Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd). In honor of the 40th anniversary I started thinking about other practical and cool time travel devices, I present to you all 5 of the best time travel devices in film entertainment.

Photo Booth-When We First Met

Cameras of any type, disposal, instant, 360 cameras and more all capture a moment in time. So it is both brilliant and make's sense that a photo booth would be a time machine. That's exactly what one became in the 2018 Netflix film When We First Met. Starring Adam Devine (Pitch Perfect, The Righteous Gemstones), one of those "oh him" actors and Alexandra Daddrio (Baywatch, San Andreas). Devine plays a young man who meets the girl of his friends, falls into the friend zone, and through the magic power of the photo booth. Relives the same day until he get's out of the friend zone.

Turnstile-Tenet

Another brilliant time travel device that actually makes sense. Tenet is a 2020 mind bending film directed by Christopher Nolan (2000's Batman films, Inception). As such it's concept of time travel and how it works can be convoluted and confusing, but one thing they got right in my opinion is the turnstile. Starring John David Washington and Robert Pattison, Tenent deal's with time travel in the concept of time inversion. Meaning traveling subjects can only go back in time, there's a purpose behind it but it's a windy road to get there.

The idea of a turnstile being your entry point into time travel is a freaking genius idea to me.

Rocket Pod-Time Cop

1994's Timecop is one of Jean Claude Van Damme's better films during his 90's action hero run. While all time travel movies can become convoluted and confusing, the rules of time travel in this one are fairly straight forward. In this film time travel is possible and governed by a federal agency, time travel agents use little pod's with rocket jet power to flow through time. And once those pod's kicked off, the occupant was in another period of time in a matter of seconds.

Now the only thing that never made sense was that once they entered the time period they traveled to. The pod was no more and they would appear out of thin air on foot. Very, very confusing but the pod as a travel device was cool as hell.

Hot Tub-Hot Tub Time Machine

Probably the funniest thing to be used as a time travel device because it's so far out there. The hot tub in 2010's Hot Tub Time Machine is one of my favorite time travel devices. Which make's it even more out there, is that the time machine only worked, because the group of friends accidentally doused it with some energy drink. Allowing them to wake up in 1986, as their younger selves to everyone else but still remembering the 20 plus years of their life in the future. They set out to stay on the right track but make some changes for the better.

Phone Booth-Bill & Ted

The Bill & Ted Franchise is probably my second favorite time travel franchise next to Back To The Future. To be honest they maybe neck and neck, because I love both film series for different reasons and can watch them over and over. The phone booth in the Bill and Ted film's is a very smart time travel device. When the film came out in 1989, phone booth's were everywhere so the device is practical, convenient and could hide in plain sight. There was a complete system in place on how to dial the keypad to get to the right period in time.

Now as the first film displayed 2 people in there could be one too many people, let alone more than 3. Now I know some Doctor Who fans would say Tardis is a better time machine, but damnit I'm sticking with the good ol phone booth with this one.
