5 Underrated Summer Movies

It's officially summer, which means freshly mowed lawns, bbq's or cookouts whatever you want to call it. It's scorching out so we need snowballs, smores, and slurpees. Of course for the kid in everyone, ice cream is consumed in abundance to cool down from the heat.

Summer also means movies, namely summer blockbuster movies. Often alongside those big blockbuster movies, are the little summer films that cater to a certain audience or are of a less popular genre. So in this blog I'm covering 5 underrated films that set in the summer.

5. Just Looking

Just Looking is a cleanish film for all the guys who were pervs when they went through the puberty stage. Directed by Jason Alexander of Seinfeld fame. Set in the 1950's the movie follows a 14 year old teen shipped to queens for the summer to stay with his aunt and uncle, and stay out of trouble. So intrigued by sex, he's on a mission to catch a couple in the act. He meets some new friends and they embark on their summer peeping tom mission.

While its not a great film. It has it ha ha moments, and is a coming of age film. That will remind you of the random things that crossed your mind when sex first came to the forefront of it.

Just Looking is currently available on Tubi and Pluto.

4.  The To Do List

Another sex based summer film. The To Do List a 2013 film starring Aubrey Plaza has its shares of laughs. Set in 1993, it follows Aubrey's character Brandy, a booksmart class valedictorian. Who decides before heading off to college, she needs to let loose and make up for things she didnt do in high school.

One thing being have sex with her crush, which she soon finds out requires a bit more work than she thought. With the help of her friends and a job at the local pool, summer season is in full swing in this film

The To Do List is currently available on Pluto.

3. Summer of 84

Released in 2018, this film set in 1984 follows a group of kids enjoying their summer. Their small town in Oregon has grappled with the disappearance of 13 teenage boys over the years. Davey a young man in the group of friends thinks he may have a lead on who committed those crimes.

The boys spend their summer playing detective trying to make leads on the case, and convince the adults in town they have an idea of the killer. It's a typical kid summer adventure movie just a bit more dangerous in the horror genre. It's quite enjoyable though.

Summer of 84 is currently only available to rent.

2. The 4:30 Movie

This Kevin Smith directed semiautobiogrpahical film was just released last fall, and man what a  gem it is. The film set in 1986 follows main character Brian and his two buddies Burny and Belly who plan to hit the movie theater one day, and hop between film showings. A slight monkey wrench is thrown in when Brian's crush Melody agrees to go on a date with him for a 4:30 showing of a movie.

The quartet head to the movie theater and must battle with a egomaniac theater owner, hot girls, bullies, and bad ass kids. All while just trying to see a movie on a hot summer day.

The movie is currently only available to rent.

1. One Crazy Summer

This 1986 cult classic stars John Cusack and Demi Moore. Cusack plays a recent high school graduate hoping to attend an art school in the fall. To get accepted he has to write and draw a love story. So he heads to Nantucket with his friends and unintentionally falls in love with Demi Moore's character Cassandra.

In the meantime he and his friends must help Cassandra save her grandparents home from developers. While contending with some of the quirky, wacky, sometimes strange citizens of the island. While a cult classic it is still underappreciated as a film. It shows how fun a carefree summer just can be.

One Crazy Summer is currently available on Tubi.

6 Underrated Christmas movie's

It's December, which mean's if you haven't started it's time to watch our favorite Christmas movies. While there are certain Christmas movies that are a must watch every year. You know the Home Alone, This Christmas, Jingle All The Way, Elf and Christmas Story of the world.

While these classics are must watch, every year and in some cases anytime of year. There are some Christmas movies that should be added to the yearly rotation. I'm here to let you know about those ones if you haven't watched them or heard of them.

The Night Before

This 2015 film is a lot funnier than it is given credit for. Starring Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the movie touches a very important topic that is often overlooked. That is when life changes force friendships and brotherhoods to adjust things.

The three friends are poised to end a yearly Christmas tradition, but not everyone is completely on board with the idea. The film explores a wild night for the trio as they try to attend an exclusive event that's been eluding them for years.

The Night Before is currently available on Starz.

Christmas with the Kranks

This 2004 film stars Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis as a married couple in a very festive neighbor who decides they are skipping the Holiday cheer. Their daughter is on a peace corp's mission and they decide to take a 10 day cruise to the Caribbean, then at the 11th hour their daughter share's she is coming home for the holidays. What soon ensues is some last minute efforts to get in the Christmas spirit.

It's not a laugh out loud movie, but it has a certain charm to it. Also the older I get the more I understand the Krank's mindset of doing the holiday's a bit different and not being "extra". If you need a Christmas movie you've never seen that is entertaining, You won't be disappointed with the Kranks.

The film is currently available on Disney +, Hulu, and Prime Video.

Deck The Halls

The older you get while you deal with the complexities and stress of life, the little thing's can bring you great joy. Sometimes the joy is decorating your house in the most extravagant way possible, often refusing to be shown up by the competition. That's the basic premise of this 2006 film starring Matthew Broderick and Danny Devito.

The two are competing neighbors vying for who can decorate their house in the most over the top way possible. Eventually competing with one another in other parts of life. Is it a Christmas classic? if you ask me no. Is it a quality Christmas film that is criminally overlooked? yes. Should you check it out? Absolutely.

It's currently available to watch on Hulu, Disney +, Paramount +, and Pluto. It's also frequently shown on cable TV this month.

The Perfect Holiday

Morris Chestnut and Gabrielle Union starred in this 2007 film, flanked by Terrance Howard, Queen Latifah, Katt Williams, Faizon Love (I guess before the beef) and the late hella funny Charlie Murphy. Gabrielle Union stars as a divorced mom of three just trying to maintain her sanity, while yearning for a new relationship. Morris Chestnut plays a songwriter and part-time Mall Santa Benjamin just trying to find his way. Through some mischievous planning by Union's daughter, the two eventually start dating.

Of course there are some bumps and hurdles along the way, in the name of love and the Christmas spirit.

You can watch The Perfect Holiday this month on Hulu, Disney +. and Peacock. It typically is shown on BET and Starz during the holiday season.

Holiday Rush

This 2019 Netflix Original Movie stars Romany Malco and Sonequa Martin-Green. Romany play's a radio DJ named Rush who is laid off just before the holidays as his radio station is bought by a larger corporation who change the format. He and his four children are forced to readjust their lives and lifestyles and move in with his aunt (music legend Darlene love). He then buys an old radio station with his producer played by Sonequa Martin-Green, soon they face an uphill battle against the same corporation trying to block them from hitting the airwaves.

While also starting a new relationship as they can't resist the sparks flying, and his children having to adjust to their new lives and his new relationship.  It's really akin to a traditional Hallmark movie, but I greatly enjoy it. Give it a chance, you won't be disappointed.

8-Bit Christmas

Since it's release in 2021, I love this movie and look forward to turning it on soon as Christmas season hit. This HBO Max (now Max) original film stars Neil Patrick Harris and Steve Zahn, taking a queue from A Christmas Story the film follows an adult character named Jake Doyle played by Harris. Who recounts a Christmas of his youth in 1989 when all he wanted was a Nintendo for Christmas. Of course chaos ensues to get one and it's not an easy feat, yet the child Jake learn's a viable lesson that Christmas.

It's A Christmas Story for a new generation. It's funny, it speaks to so many kid's experiences with popular toys and electronics over the years. It has messages of hard work, and family that are important in all stages of life. I highly recommend it as more people learn about the movie, in my opinion it will be a future Christmas classic.

5 Underrated Football Movies

College football is back dominating Saturdays, and the NFL kicks off their season later this week. I started thinking about football movies, more importantly one's nobody remember or just wasn't popular for whatever reason when it debuted. For that here are 5 underrated football movies.

5. Rise and Walk: The Dennis Byrd Story

When it comes to TV movies based on a NFL player's story everyone adores Brian's Song, the 1971 film starring James Caan as Brian Piccolo and Billy Dee Williams as his friend and teammate Gale Sayer's. In 1994 Fox TV produced a film that is just as good in Rise & Walk: The Dennis Byrd Story starring Peter Berg. Dennis Byrd was a New York Jet's defensive end who was left paralyzed after colliding with teammate Scott Mersereau. Through therapy and determination he was eventually able to walk again and this is his story.

4. Invincible

Football films based on real scenarios the golden films  which are quite inspiring are Rudy, Remember The Titans, and We Are Marshall. 2006's Invincible starring Mark Wahlberg is just as inspiring as those films. Based on the true story of Philadelphia substitute teacher Vince Papale who attends a open tryout the Philadelphia Eagles are conducting and actually makes the team. Being as though Vince was truly down on his luck before making the team, the film has a good message about pushing through the storms of adversity.

3. The Longshots

Another film based on a true story, The Longshots is a 2008 film starring KeKe Palmer and Ice Cube. KeKe play's Jasmine Plummer a pre-teen who join's a pop warner team encouraged by her Uncle Curtis played by Ice Cube. She must work through the typical sexism even from adults against a girl playing a male dominated game even as she clearly has the skill.

2. Wildcats

1986's WildCats stars Goldie Hawn who yearning to be a football head coach and live up to her fathers legacy, takes a job at a tough inner-city school. She deal's with racism being a white woman coaching a predominately Black team in a male dominated sport, and sexism as everyone think's she doesn't have a clue. When she however refuses to be intimidated, the team soon follows her lead and starts winning. Besides Goldie Hawn, the film features young cast members such as Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson, Robyn Lively, and Mykelti Williamson. Even Aunt Helen from The Jamie Foxx Show is in the movie, in her debut film. A young LL Cool J even makes a brief appearance in the film.

1. Draft Day

2014's Draft Day stars Kevin Costner as the general manager of the Cleveland Browns analyzing his options for who to add to the team on draft day. Besides antagonizing over who to pick, he must also contend with relationship/family scenarios, threats from management, agents and other folks who feel they have a voice. And his fathers legacy, a lot to take in over the course of a day. The film covers the business side of the NFL and the craziness of everything that goes into making a draft decision. For people who enjoy learning how the front office makes decisions even if it's dramatized, as much as they like the on the field product. This film is for them.

Five Criminally Overlooked Adventure Movies

Following up on my recent blog about action adventure film's missing in Hollywood's slate these dates. I started thinking about the classics of that genre, as well as film's that are very good in their own right. However, for whatever reason it just did not connect with the audience, and have been lost in the realm of endless amounts of entertainment. So with that here are five overlooked action adventure film's that deserve more love.

5. The Phantom

The Phantom is a 1996 film starring Billy Zane, Kristy Swanson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Treat Williams. It's based on the pulp comic strip, following Billy Zane as the hero who has followed a 400 year family tradition to withhold justice as "The Phantom". He's racing against Treat Williams and crew for the macguffin, The Skulls of Touganda three skulls made of different raw material which provides it's holder with immense power.

The film has some corny dialogue and Zane may not have been the right guy for the leading man role, but it's structure and concept are straight adventure films. It features shootouts, sword fights, fist fights, dangerous bridges and everything else you'd look for in a an adventure movie. While similar films like The Shadow have gained popularity over the years, it's sad The Phantom is still overlooked.

4. Zathura: A Space Adventure

The 2005 film Zathura is based on the 2002 book of the same name, which is considered a "sequel" to the Jumanji book. Starring Tim Robbins, Dax Shephard, Josh Hutcherson, and Kristen Stewart in one of her earlier most famous roles. It follows the same premise as Jumanji instead of a board game based in the jungle, this one is based on space game. With all the action taking place in the main character's home, and it has been uprooted to space.

The main characters fight off meteor showers, aliens, and other space related road blocks, they also learn about sibling relationships in the process. The film wasn't a box office success upon it's debut and has suffered the same fate going on 20 years later of being overlooked. Which is a shame as it's a rather imaginative movie featuring a lot of practical effects, and should be given a chance.

3. Tomb Raider-2018

This updated take on the Tomb Raider film's from the early 2000's was released in 2018. Starring Alicia Vikander, Dominic West, Daniel Wu, and Walter Goggins. This film is an origin story for Lara Croft as such it stands apart from the Angelina Jolie led film's. Lara is not a formidable fighter or tomb raider just yet, and has to learn as she goes along. While learning there is more to her father Lord Richard Croft and his company than she previously was aware of.

There's some good archery skills displayed in this film. Globe trotting, and of course the usual macguffin that causes the globe trotting. Alicia Vikander hold's her own as Lara, and really grows into her role as the film progresses. It is a more realistic and gritty approach to the tomb raider world and maybe that's why people shied away from it. Which is disappointing, as they truly missed out a newer gem in the action-adventure genre.

2. Prince of Persia

Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time was released in 2010 and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Alfred Molina, Ben Kingsley, and Gemma Arterton. Based on the video game series of the same name, it was a deliberate attempt by Disney to follow the same model as Pirates Of The Caribbean and create a new film franchise. Unfortunately thing's did not go as planned, with one contributing factor likely being the whitewashing of the cast. Something Hollywood continues to struggle with to this day with films.

Outside of that, the movie had an entertaining plot, effects, and action sequences. Complete with sword fights and chases throughout the streets of Persia. The box office returns were ok, and critics even admitted it had a few flaws but was one of the better video game adaptations. Many can agree Gyllenhaal may not have been right for that role, and that became the main story of the film. Don't listen to the naysayers, if you've never seen it give it a shot.

1. Adventures of TinTin

Based on the French comic strip, 2011's Adventures of TinTin was intended to be the first film in a trilogy series. With each film in the trilogy directed by separate high profile directors, Steven Spielberg directed the first one, while Peter Jackson was slated for the second one. I don't remember who the third director was supposed to be. The film was all CGI and starred Jamie Bell as TinTin, Daniel Craig as Ivan Sakhraine, and Andy Serkis as Captain Haddock. Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, and Toby Jones are other well known actors who rounded out the cast.

The film starts off with a bang and only picks up from there, never truly slowing down even when advancing the plot. Since it is an animated film, the action stakes are a little higher and the characters travel around the world with more ease. Resulting in several exciting chases including an airplane chase. The movie did alright at the box office, was revered by critics and actually was nominated and won several awards. Unfortunately it did not connect with audiences, and as such did not receive the popularity that it should.

Make no mistake about it, if you like a good adventure film and have not yet seen this movie. make it an priority like today to watch it.
