5 Valentines Day Horror Movies You May Have Missed

 

Valentine's Day is a "holiday" meant to celebrate love for a significant other. There are several romantic films released this time of year celebrating the season. As we know love can be dangerous, and for all the romantic films to warm your heart.

 There are films out there to warn about the dangerous side of love. Namely horror films, and in this article I'm going to touch on some Valentines day films you may have missed. 

Cupid

An independent film currently available on Tubi. This 2020 film follows a teenage girl who must contend with bullies and mean girls at her school. When one bullying incident goes overboard, she uses her witches powers to summon Cupid. Well this Cupid hates Valentine's Day and goes on a warpath 

Valentine

This 2001 film starred David Boreaneaz of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel, and later Bones fame. Follows a stalker who is seems to be out for revenge, against some young ladies  who wronged him during his high school years. This movie flew under the radar upon its release, and still is not that well known. Its by no means a game changing horror movie, but it's serviceable.

My Bloody Galentine

This 2024 Tubi original is a horror film in a sense, but its more of a horror comedy with some over the topness camp thrown in. It follows three young ladies who endure many ladies V-day fear, getting dumped before the holiday. While basking in their sorrow and deciding to celebrate their Galentines. They opt to get back at their exe's, with no ill intentions at heart. They get a little shook up when things get deadly 

My Valentine

Once upon a time, Hulu had an anthology film series produced by Blumhouse called Into The Dark. With each film focusing on a holiday, and it ran for two seasons. In 2020 the series produced My Valentine. The plot follows a pop singer who has basically her entire music and image stolen from her ex, in favor of his new girlfriend making her way in the industry.

When the three get locked into a concert venue together, some blood gotta be shed.

Heart Eyes

Released last February this hidden gem, could one day be a new era classic. Ok, I maybe jumping the gun there; but it's one of the better horror films so far this decade. It follows a serial killer who hunts couples every Valentines day. When the killer mistakes two colleagues as a couple and goes on the prowl. They just maybe time enough for him.

The movie has some legitimate scares and laughs. And worth a viewing, it is currently available on Netflix.

5 Horror B-Movie's To Check Out

Every year when spooky season comes around, folks put up their decorations, buy some candy, and often sit down and watch their favorites. Just as costumes and candy are synonymous with Halloween, so too are horror flicks. In particular bad and campy horror films, and some good B-Movies.

This article I'm focusing on some B-movies I watched this year. To help give you something new to check out as we edge closer to Halloweeen. Here are 5 B-movies to check out 

Takeout-Tubi

This Tubi original released last month is a gem of the B movie horror genre. Set overnight at a fairly remote diner, it follows three employees at the diner. After a substantial award is announced for a local serial killer, and recognizing the weirdos that already come to the diner. The three set out to see if any of their patrons are in fact the serial killer on the loose.

Bit-Prime

Think The Craft with lesbains and vampires and you have Bit. A new transplant to Los Angeles and falls in with a group of feminist vampires intent on staking their claim in the world. It's an OK B-movie horror film. I will give the film created for the backstory and lore of vampires in their universe.

Last Night At The Terrace Lanes-Prime

Another B-movie gem for spooky season. This 2024 film is set at a bowling alley, due to close for good at the end of the night. A small group of cult members following something akin to a prophecy have to complete some sets at the the very location, the bowling alley resides. And to do they need to get rid of everyone inside. So a father and daughter duo are the only ones who can stop them.

Last Night At Terrace Lanes is available on Prime Video and tubi.

Haunt Season-Prime

Available on Prime Video 2024's Haunt Season takes place at a Haunted House attraction. Which unless I havent seen them, there aren't many Halloween movies set at those attractions. Anyway the film follows the cast of the attraction. Strange things occur at the attraction when random murders start occurring. It's clear there is a killer on the loose targeting the cast and crew.

Hell Of A Summer-Hulu

This 2023 film that just got a wide release this April, is co-written and co- directed by Finn Wolfhard better known as Mike in Stranger Things alongside  Billy Bryk. It is 100% inspired by horror film's of the 80's. Set at a summer camp before it opens for the summer. A group of counselors due to work there start picked off by a masked murder. While there are some moments that miss, and the tone can be all over the place. This is a great debut behind the camera for Finn and Billy.

Horror Films For The Culture

It’s October..the leaves are falling..it’s a little chill in the air..and for some folks pumpkin spice is available. October of course brings with it Halloween, costumes, candy, spooky decorations, and movies! Lots of Horror marathons to get you through the month of October, we all know the staples like Jason, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Meyers. In this article I’m going to break down 5 Horror films for that culture that you should watch. Some are straight up horror films, others are more thrillers, and some are just campy.

5. Blacula

Released in 1972 during the Blaxploitation era. The film follows a vampire who has been dormant for centuries and awakens in 1970’s Los Angeles to wreak havoc. The film was one of the first Horror films to focus on Black characters and has its place in history because of it. It contains the common tropes of a 1970’s Blaxploitation film and has it’s fair share of gore in it as well. It spawned a sequel in 1973 “Scream Blacula Scream”

4. Bones

Turn on BET during the month of October and you’re bound to find this movie on. Starring Uncle Snoop, Pam Grier, Bianca Lawson, and Clifton Powell. This film was released in 2001 and directed by Ernest Dickerson (Juice, Never Die Alone, The Wire, Dexter, The Walking Dead, The Purge). Snoop Dogg stars as Jimmy Bones, a street hustler murdered by people he trusted the most. He returns from the dead years later to enact his revenge. The film is a homage to the Blaxploitation era, while the production values may scream B-movie but is actually a decent film with its fair share of gore.

3. The People Under The Stairs

Directed by Wes Craven (Nightmare on Elm Street) and starring Brandon Adams, Ving Rhames, Bill Cobbs, and Kelly Jo Minter. The film was released in 1991 and while classified as a horror and depicting killings it isn’t gory but more disturbing. Disturbing along the lines of “Black People don’t do that shit”. Brandon Adam stars as a kid who finds himself trapped inside the home of a very strange family and finds out just how strange the family is and how their behavior has affected other people. The film touches on subjects that are still relevant today such as gentrification, child abduction and abuse, and class warfare. 

2. Tales From The Hood

You should know this anthology film or at least seen clips of it. Released in 1995 and directed by Rusty Cundieff with Spike Lee executive producing. The film stars Clarence Williams, David Alan Grier, Paula Jai Parker, Joe Torry and several others. Among the different topics covered throughout the film are domestic and child abuse, police brutality, slavery and racism, inner city gang violence and more. All with a horror twist that’s truly entertaining and provides social commentary. A sequel followed years later in 2018 that was rather lackluster, skip this sequel and watch this classic over and over again.

1. Candyman

Released in 1992 and starring a guy who is frightening just by standing Tony Todd. The film follows the urban legend of The Candyman  a ghost who was brutally killed in the 19^th century. Say his name five times in a mirror and he’ll kill those who speak of his name. The film is very gory and Candyman as I mentioned is frightening, add the setting of the notorious Cabrini-Green projects in Chicago. This film was a horror film made just for the culture and it delivers on all cylinders. It spawned two sequels “Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh” and “Candyman: Day of the Dead” with a remake scheduled for release in 2020 co-written and produced by Jordan Peele. Candyman the character is a legend in the Horror genre along with the Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger’s , etc. If you enjoy horror movies and have never seen this film do yourself a favor and check it out.
