Wesley Snipes An Underrated 90's Action Hero

Wesley Snipes when you hear the name and think of roles, you think of Blade, Nino Brown (New Jack City), or Sidney Dean (White Men Can't Jump). He has had a long 40 year career that still is quite underrated, and he is also is one of the most underrated action stars ever. When you think of action stars particularly during the 90's Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jean Claude Van damme, Bruce Willis  and Steven Seagal are probably the top names you think of. However Wesley Snipes was no slouch in the action genre, in fact he had a good quiet 6 year run as a action hero you may not remember. Let's take a trip down memory lane.

After a star making role as drug lord Nino Brown and then following up with the comedy classic White Men Can't Jump, Snipes showed he was a martial arts master with Passenger 57 in 1992. In the film he plays a former Secret Service agent who is a security consultant, and must save the day when a plane is hijacked in a ploy to release a notorious criminal. The film is probably known for one of his more famous lines

He followed up in '93 with Boiling Point and Rising Sun, starring alongside film legends Sean Connery and Dennis Hopper respectively. While those films were more thrillers than straight up action films, he did get to show off his action skills in both films. Then he took a turn in '93 playing one of my favorite film villains ever Simon Phoenix complete with a blonde fade in Demolition man facing off against Sylvester Stallone.

'94 he was back on the side of a hero in the oft-forgotten film Drop Zone as a U.S. Marshal who get's involved in the skydiving culture to catch some crooks. Then in '95 with Woody Harrelson and Jennifer Lopez he was a New York City transit cop caught up in the era of the Money Train. '97 he stepped into the D.C. political corruption and cover-up scene with Murder At 1600 alongside Diane Lane

The spring of '98 he starred in U.S. Marshals a sequel to The Fugitive, on the run from Tommy Lee Jone's character Sam Gerard and company. In the film Wesley's character Mark Sheridan show's off his action skills as he tries to clear his name within a government scandal. That film was just a teaser for fan's and what was to come in the summer of 1998 when Blade debuted in theaters. The half-human, half-vampire character essentially set Marvel up on the filmmaking trajectory that would kick off the MCU 10 years later with Iron Man.

With his trademark sunglasses, high powered guns, and katana Blade is arguably the role most synonymous with Wesley Snipes. Just look at how excited fans were when he appeared in Deadpool and Wolverine last summer. It also capped off his run of action films during the 90's and was not a bad way to end that decade. He spent the 2000's and 2010's in mostly B-movie action films, but for the 1990's he was one of the top action stars out there and should start getting his flowers for that.

5 Forgotten Action Movies Set Around Christmas

Christmas time brings Christmas cheer, festive atmosphere's, the season of giving and Christmas movies. While some like cheesy Christmas romantic movies (looking at you Hallmark), or Christmas comedies. Others prefer some good ass-kicking and shootouts for Christmas movies, we all know Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, and Batman Returns are Christmas movies. What about the movies set around Christmas you don't remember? There's quite a few of them and here are 5 to refresh your memory.

5. Detective Knight: Redemption

This 2022 film stars Bruce Willis in his series of Detective Knight films. Detective Knight is doing a bid after the events of the previous film Detective Knight: Rogue. However he negotiates to get released and help save the Christmas season after a jailbreak gets him jammed up. He has to stop The Christmas Bomber and The Real Saints Of Christmas terrorizing the city. The film of course has some inspiration and remnants of Die Hard.

It's available to watch on Tubi.

4. Assault on Precinct 13

So technically this movie takes place on New Year's Eve, but the Holiday season encompasses Thanksgiving til New Years. With Christmas and New Year's a week apart the Christmas season is New Year season as well. This 2005 remake of the John Carpenter original, follows Ethan Hawke as a struggling Detroit police officer who is working the holiday with a skeleton crew. His precinct is set to be closed, but has to accept some prisoners who have to be rerouted due to a dangerous storm approaching. One of those prisoners is mob boss Marion Bishop played by Laurence Fishburne, before they know it the precinct is under attack and they must band together.

Assault on Precinct 13 is currently not available for free on any streaming platforms.

3. Money Train

I just went through my new years spiel with the previous entry, and here we are again. This 1995 film stars Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes in their third film together, and Jennifer Lopez before she shot to stardom a couple years later in Selena. The trio are a pair of NYPD officers assigned to work the subway system of New York City, and help protect the money train which collects fares at every station. In their way is Donald Patterson (Robert Blake) who runs the subway system, hates their unorthodox ways and any obstruction to the money train running on time. After some hardships, Harrelson's Charlie decides to rob the Money Train on New Year's Eve.

Money Train is currently not available for free viewing on streaming platform.

2. Enemy Of The State

This 1998 film by Tony Scott starring Will Smith and Gene Hackman was ahead of the curve on it's commentary on surveillance. Will Smith plays Robert Clayton Dean, a lawyer unknowingly swept up in a murder coverup from a high-ranking government official against a politician. He soon needs the help of a recluse ex-CIA agent played by Gene Hackman to clear his name and get out of the mess. The movie does not dwell on it's Christmas season setting, but you will notice Christmas lights in the background of various scenes. And the kind of kick-off point when Dean get's thrown into the thrust of thing's he is doing Christmas shopping in a lingerie store for his wife.

Enemy Of The State is currently not available for free streaming (long live physical media).

1. Long Kiss Goodnight

There is a running joke amongst movie fans and Hollywood in general that writer/director Shane Black loves some Christmas. Lethal Weapon is set during that season, along with Iron Man 3, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Last Boy Scout (though I don't remember it). And this film The Long Kiss Goodnight starring Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson. Geena Davis plays Samantha Caine an amnesic woman rising her daughter alongside her daughter in a small town. After a car accident she slowly starts gaining new lethal skills she knew she had, and alongside P.I. Mitch (Samuel L. Jackson) she sets out to find her real identity. Besides snow on the ground, there's a Christmas parade and decorations everywhere to let you know it's set during Christmas.

The film is currently available on Pluto.

"Roller Coaster" Adventure Movies Need A Comeback

Today is the 25th anniversary of  The Mummy starring Brendan Frasier and Rachel Weisz as the heroes, and Arnold Vosloo as the villain Imhotep. I watched the movie over the weekend in honor of its anniversary and it got me thinking. It's time there is a resurgence in Hollywood of the action adventure genre.

The type of films often described as a "roller coaster" adventure film. The Mummy and its two sequels along with Mask of Zorro and its sequel helped the genre experience a brief period of popularity in the late 90's-mid 2000's. New Line's 2002 film Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring and its sequels aided the adventure films.

Then Disney's Pirates Of The Carribean film released in 2003 and helped continue that trend. Along with National Treasure starring Nicolas Cage, another Disney property that was released in 2004.

Tin the late 2000's and early 2010's. That genre lost popularity to films based on YA literature like Twilight, Hunger Games, Divergent and Maze Runner. Of course we can't forget the Harry Potter film series. That wasn't the only thing that clobbered action adventure films during that time. Superhero movies and the juggernaut that was the marvel cinematic universe sucked up any genre in its path.

In 2017 a legacy to 1995's Jumanji film was released. Which that film Welcome To The Jungle and it's sequel 2019's The Next Level bought some popularity to the genre, and while both films were highly successful they couldn't sustain the genre on its own. Last year's film Dunegons & Dragons: Honor Amongst Thieves was mildly successful in trying to revive those type of films.

With the MCU trying to stabilize itself after several blunders. Other comic book films waiting in the wings. Long standing franchises like the Fast & Furious series heading into the sunset. Indiana Jones not connecting with a new generation. Franchises like Masters of the Universe and Power Rangers having a hard time getting off the ground. While properties like G.I. Joe and to an extent Transformers not able to refresh themselves.

It's time someone steps in and brings back those swashbuckling, gunfights left and right, falls and screams and high stakes. With just enough plot and dialogue to keep the story until the next action piece. We are waiting to experience the whiplash of roller coaster adventure films.

Best Action Movie Dads

It's that time of year to celebrate all of the great father's out there, and all that we do big and small for our families. As I do every year since becoming a father, I write a blog or two about fatherhood and pop culture in some way. This year I decided to focus on Action Movie father's.

We all love a good action movie, and action character especially when they are relatable. Here are the top five action movie dad's in my opinion.

5. Scott Lang

Scott Lang may not be as strong as Thor, as smart as Tony Stark, or noble as Captain America. One thing Scott Lang definitely is..is a father. A very goofy, flawed and aloof one at that, but a very loving one. In each of his three Ant-Man films, his relationship with his daughter is a driving force within the plot.

Feeling like he missed so much of her life while incarcerated, then thanks to the blip and him being stuck in the Quantum Realm. He cherishes every moment he has with Cassie. He may not be out snapping necks, but his actions are made with the intent to secure his relationship with Cassie and protect her at all cost.

4. John Matrix

Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as John Matrix in the 1985 film Commando. A single father who happens to be a retired Special Forces colonel. He set's out to rescue his daughter Jenny, when she is used as collateral to get him to perform an assassination attempt on a political figure in a fictional South American country.

John's not having any of that and set's out to destroy a lot of shit to save his daughter. When he's not blowing shit up, he's a gentle giant taking walks with Jenny and be a nurturer of pets. Bottom line don't cross him or his daughter.

3. Cameron Poe

In 1997's Con Air, Nicolas Cage play's Cameron Poe a former Army Ranger who killed a man attacking his pregnant wife. Eight year's later eligible  for parole, he just so happens to be on the same plan with a bunch of hardcore murderers who decide to hijack the plane. All he want's to do is get home to his wife and his now 8 year old daughter he's never met.

Cameron's sole purpose in this film is to get to his family. He save's the day and attacks any prisoners who views him as a threat. All in the name of a husband's and father's love, you can't go wrong with that.

2. Roger Murtaugh

Roger Murtaugh is a LAPD veteran played by Danny Glover in the Lethal Weapon series. He always manages to put up with his crazy partner Riggs (Mel Gibson) antics, and his most famous line in the entire series is "I'm getting too old for this shit". Murtaugh is the father of three children Rianne, Nick, and Carrie. Rianne has subplots in the first and fourth films, while Nick has a significant subplot in the third film. Poor Carrie is just there in all three films.

Through the series Murtaugh proves he will do whatever is necessary to protect his family, including becoming one cold bastard making sure they are safe when they are targeted by criminals. In the fourth film he also establishes a friendship with a Chinese immigrant Hong bonding over both being family men.

Through the series it's often highlighted that one defining trait of Murtaugh is how much of a family man he is.

1. Bryan Mills

We've all seen the films and offered our opinions on what we would do in those scenarios. The Taken film series features Liam Neeson as Bryan Mills. A former CIA agent who travels to France to rescue his daughter who has been abducted by some sex traffickers. Simply put Bryan shows how dangerous and lethal he is when he goes on his mission.

He may not have been a great husband and realizes the error of his previous ways, but no doubt he is a top tier father throughout the film series. Traveling half way around the world to rescue his daughter (which every parent would do) and using all the ingenuity he can to make it work. Is why he's one of the top action movie dads
