10 Late Night Talk Shows You Forgot

 Netflix is stepping back into the late night TV space as it pushes the limits of streaming. Premiering  Everybody's Live With John Mulaney this week on the platform. New episodes will be released every Wednesday for the next 12 weeks. The show got the wheels running in my brain about late night talk shows.

More specifically late night shows that did not last, often times because the host wasn't the right fit. There are other reasons as well, but it led me down my rabbit hole. Here are 10 Late Night talk shows you likely don't remember 

10. The Jay Leno Show

In 2004 Jay Leno announced that he would retire from The Tonight Show in 2009, and Conan O'Brien would take the reigns. Well 2009 comes and Leno has a change of heart, so to keep peace NBC gave Leno a show as the lead in to The Tonight Show.

After initial curiosity fans tuned out, and after a debacle of PR and talent nightmares. Conan O'Brien was out and moved on to another network, and Leno was back hosting The Tonight Show.

9. Whoopi Goldberg Show

Before she became a co-host of The View on weekday mornings. Whoopi Goldberg attempted to rule late night TV. Likely riding the wave of Arsenio Hall, Whoopi Goldberg was given her own show in 1992.

The half hour syndicated program featured Whoppi interviewing one guest in a sit down format. It was able to last a full season, producing 112 episodes before being canceled in 1993.

8. Chevy Chase Show

Back in 1993 Fox was still working to compete with the big three networks (ABC, CBS, NBC). They figured all those networks had late night talk shows, so they needed one. They hired comedy "legend" Chevy Chase to host his own talk show.Show.

Debuting in September that year, Chase's style of comedy and likely his personality. Just didn't resonate with a new generation, along with other hiccups the show was canceled by October. 

7. The Jon Stewart Show

Before he gained fame talking politics on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart had a little show that could on MTV. Debuting on MTV in 1993, The Jon Stewart Show was a 30 minute late night show that appealed to Gen X. With topics and guests that they could connect to.

The show gained so much popularity on the network, that it was reformatted and aired in syndication in the fall of '94. However the goodwill didn't extend in syndication and the show was canceled in June of '95.

6. Late Night With Zach

In 2002 long before gaining fame as the eccentric member of the wolfpack. Zach Galifianakis hosted a late night show on VH1. Well it was kind of a hybrid late night show and mockumentary. And Galifianakis's style of humor may have been too zany for alot of folks.

Debuting in March, the series was done and over with by May. It would take Zach another 7 years of grinding, before The Hangover made him a star.

5. VH1 Live

Before VH1 went full throttle into reality shows and reruns, they tried to expand their programming. VH1 Live! was born, hosted by a relatively unknown Marc Lamont Hill. Debuting in July of 2016, I'm not sure if people didn't know about the show. Or just didn't care for it, but it was canceled in September of that year. Helping pave the way for the VH1 we know today.

4. Busy Tonight

Busy Phillips is a Hollywood actress best known for playing the bubbly sidekick role. A lucrative career for her so far, someone came up with the  idea to give her a talk show. Airing on E! network in 2018, the show was able to produce over a 100 episodes. 

However Busy's style, topics, and guests seemed to cater to a niche audience, and the masses couldn't vibe with her. Resulting in the show ending in May of 2019.

3. Brand X With Russell Brand

In the early 2010's Russell Brand was one of the hottest comedians on the planet. After achieving success in a few film roles, FX decided to give him a late night talk shows. 

Debuting in 2012, Brand X with Russell Brand offered an unique concept initially as Brand did a monologue the entire time. The format switched up a bit later on to include guests, but Brand's style of comedy wasn't for everyone. It was a less is more approach for him and the show ended in May of 2013.

2. Too late with Adam Carolla

In 2005 after The Man Show ended and Jimmy Kimmel moved to ABC. Comedy Central wanted to keep his co-host Adam Carolla on the network, and Too Late With Adam Carolla was born. Debuting August that year, the show featured Carolla's brand of humor in a 30 minute format.

By himself he didn't connect with audiences, resulting in the show ending in November.

1. ALF's Hit Talk Show

In 2004 TV Land did what I thought was a genius move. They revived the character from 80's sitcom Alf and gave him his own talk show. With Ed McMahon as his sidekick, Alf actually interviewed guests and had banter with them.

The concept may have been ahead of its time, and maybe too meta for the audience. It ended after 7 episodes, but bought eyeballs to the network to watch Alf reruns.

5 movies To Watch If You Enjoyed Paradise

Season 1 of 2025's best new show in Hulu's Paradise just ended. Created by Dan Fogelman who also created one of my must see TV shows when it aired This Is Us, and starring Sterling K. Brown who starred in that series. Paradise is a post apocalyptic political murder mystery that hit the gas at the end of episode 1 and didn't let up. I, like many am already anticipating season 2 and hope the wait is not too long. The show obviously has many influences, so I decided to pick five films that I think fan's may enjoy if they liked the show. Now I can't say for sure these films were influences, but I saw similarities watching the show, so here are we.  

Warning if you haven't finished, let alone watched the show. You probably don't want to read much further.

Truman show

As episode 1 ended and it was revealed the characters were living inside of a dome with a focus on the artificial sun. I couldn't help but think about 1998's the Truman Show starring Jim Carrey, in which he lived inside of a dome. While in Paradise the dome was built to save humanity, the Truman Show it's purpose was a large TV set to fabricate this world around Truman Burbank as millions watched his life 24/7. Truman and his "cast" lived in a false reality much like the inhabitants of Paradise.

Snowpiercer

Released in the U.S. in 2014 and starring Chris Evans, Snowpiercer followed the remaining population of civilization living abroad a train. The train continually travels around the globe with society broken up into classes onboard. The wealthy live in luxurious spacious cars in the front of the train, and the poor are crammed together in the back scraping for seconds. Led by Curtis (Chris Evans) the inhabitants of the back stage a revolution making their way to the front of the train.

Besides the post apocalyptic aspect, Snowpiecer and Paradise both involve different methods of housing humanity. In addition the class aspect, as in Paradise many of those chosen to live in the dome were wealthy, were needed for the project, or had connections.

Vantage Point

This 2008 film may seem like a bit of a stretch but hear me out. In Vantage Point an assassination attempt occurs on the U.S. President while in Spain. The film is then told from multiple perspectives of bystanders who may have seen possible clues to who did it. What happens in Paradise once President Bradford is confirmed dead? Between video footage, interviews, and episodes devoted to certain characters different vantage point's are displayed. On where folks were that night, to backstory relationships with the president, and how the community would move past that.

Deep impact 

1998's Deep Impact was one of two released that summer alongside Armageddon, focusing on humanity trying to prepare and stop an asteroid from colliding with earth. There's debate about which is a better film, but it's mostly agreed upon that Deep Impact is the more scientifically accurate. Much like Paradise, Deep Impact plot point's included the government making efforts to prepare for a Extinction level event (ELE), while also waiting too long to share with the general public. And last but not least having an underground shelter ready to go with certain citizens already confirmed to be have a slot in the shelter. In addition showing the immediate impact and aftermath of those events. 

Thirteen Days

In true Dan Fogelman fashion, episode 7 of Paradise opened with a prologue that on the surface seemed to have nothing to do with the series. What many have deemed one of the best written and acted TV episodes in history, opened with a nameless Colonel back in 1962 talking to his wife about how a catastrophic event was averted. That event was the Cuban missile crisis, it factors into the episode later in true Fogelman fashion.

It makes sense that 2000's Thirteen Days was likely an inspiration.  Starring Bruce Greenwood and Kevin Costner, the film dramatizes President Kennedy's and the military efforts to avoid a war with Russia over missiles that are stationed in Cuba. The film highlights the stakes and the pressure world leaders go through during times like that. You felt all of that tension and pressure in James Marsden's and the rest of the casts acting in episode 7 of Paradise.

She's Dangerous-5 Underrated Female Action Heroines

 

When it come's to action film's and the female action hero, there have some badass women on the silver screen. Often in films they can hold their own and don't let anything get in their way. If you ask the average filmgoer about badass female action heroes, for most of them you will hear about The Bride in Kill Bill, Charlie Baltimore in Long Kiss Goodnight, Trinity in The Matrix, and of course the pioneers in Ellen Ripley from Aliens and Sarah Connor from the Terminator series. Well I'm here to share 5 underrated female characters in action movies that kicked ass and looked good doing it.

Sam

Gunpowder Milkshake is a 2021 Netflix original, that I honestly think got lost in the shuffle of being released in that weird pandemic phase, where people were trying to return to normalcy but we weren't quite there yet. And as such Netflix didn't promote it as much as they should have. Starring Karen Gilliam (Gamora in Guardians Of The Galaxy) as Sam. A young lady who has been raised to be an assassin since her mom who was also an assassin was killed in front of her as a child.

When she pivots on a job and rescues a little girl instead of doing her assignment, all hell breaks loose. Sam alongside her sisterhood of assassins show they can fight and handle heavy artillery with the best of them.

 Lorraine Broughton

If you say to someone not well versed in movies that Charlize Theron, one of the prettiest woman in the world kicked ass in a movie. You may get the really treatment? But that was the case in 2017's Atomic Blonde, a trippy 80's set action movie set before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Theron stars as Lorraine Broughton a MI6 agent tasked with recovering "The List". A document containing every agent from every covert and intelligence agency around the world, currently working in Berlin. As you can imagine many people want that list, so Lorraine puts her best foot forward and ensures that doesn't happen.

Colombiana

First, congratulations to Zoe Saldana for winning an academy award for best supporting actress. She deserves the honor and has been putting in work for years with a versatile resume. One example being the 2011 film Colombiana. Saldana stars as Cataleya a young lady who is an successful assassin, and has been plotting for revenge since she was 9 against the drug lord who killed her parents.

Once she starts down the path of taking down the drug lord and his army. She uses survival skills, smarts, stealth, and some kick ass gunplay to get the job done. 

Selene

The Underworld film series has become a cult classic, since the first films debut in 2003. However, I still don't think the film gets it's proper credit for it's world building and mythology of the constant battle between vampires and lycans (werewolves). 

Right in the middle of the action is a vampire "Death Dealer" named Selene, played by Kate Beckinsale. Being a vampire, Selene benefits from hyper reflexes to aid in fights. Besides hand to hand combat, she was skilled in multitude of weapons from ancient bow and arrows to modern machine guns. She more than held her own against armies of henchmen and the final boss of respective films in the series.

Alice

Alicia Marcus better known as Alice, has endured an awful lot across the six films in the Resident Evil film franchise. Played by Milla Jovovich in the film's, Alice does everything in her power to limit the spread of the T-virus. Which was created to cure her from a rare disease.

Fighting large swaths of not so average zombies can be exhausting. Somehow Alice got it done, whether using her fist as a weapon, her body, or some trusty weapons. She often came out on top against the competition, prepared to fight another day.

Five Black 90's Sitcoms You Probably Forgot About

 

With so much content out there, some show's and movie's slip through the cracks of time and minds. For a variety of reasons, from show's not being given a chance to not being accessible anywhere in this digital age. Or honestly they weren't good enough to deserve to be remembered. With that in mind, I decided to focus on 5 sitcom's from the 90's with Black leads that no one remembers. 

Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer

A product of it's time, I remember the promo's for the show and some of the controversy surrounding it. Although I was too young to know why there was outrage, but not fully understand it. I just know I never watched the show when it aired for it's very short life. Chi McBride starred as Desmond Pfeiffer, a U.K. transplant who serves as Abraham Lincoln's butler in the white house during the civil war era. The show only lasted 4 episodes before being cancelled and quickly disappearing from the minds of many.

Goode Behavior

During UPN's early years they did what any upstart would do, throw things at the wall and see's what stick. That's exactly what Goode Behavior likely was, starting Sherman Helmsley and Dorien Wilson. Helmsley played a recently paroled con artist who moves in with his son and his family, Dorein plays his son a college professor who is on the path to being promoted to Dean. I honestly don't remember this show, so I can't say whether it was funny or not. It only lasted one season so I'm going to guess no.

The Preston Episodes

After leaving In Living Color with the Wayans Family, David Allen Grier decided to branch out into the sitcom world on his own.  His first shot was htis 1995 Fox network sitcom, The Preston Episodes a English college professor who moves to Manhattan after a divorce. He take's a job as a caption writer for a gossip magazine and experiences a bit of a culture clash with his coworkers. The show flew under the radar as I don't remember it one bit, and it only lasted 8 episodes with two unaired episodes in the can. Which means it probably did not showcase Grier's talent that well.

Damon

Before creating and starring in the classic 2000's sitcom My Wife and Kid's, and now starring alongside his son Damon Jr. in the CBS sitcom Poppa's House. Damon Wayans first foray as a sitcom lead was this 1998 Fox network sitcom. Wayan's starred as a Chicago undercover cop alongside his brother Bernard played by David Allen Grier who is a rent-a-cop who want's to join the force. The sitcom featured Damon navigating his home and work life. It only lasted 13 episodes which is surprising considering the comedic geniuses involved in the show.

Arsenio

After his stint as the host of the Arsenio Hall Show, Arsenio kind of disappeared from the limelight for a few years. He returned to TV in 1997 in his own ABC sitcom alongside Vivica A. Fox as his wife. The sitcom followed Arsenio as a local Atlanta sports newscaster named Michael Atwood (why he wasn't named Arsenio is very asinine). The sitcom is a traditional concept following his home and work life and how to navigate both. To be honest outside of his legendary late-night show, I've never found him to be actually funny. So I'm not shocked his sitcom was cancelled after 7 episodes never to be seen again.

Black Led Cartoons For Today's Kid's

 One thing I quickly learned since becoming a parent in 2020, was that you soon get sucked into the shows your kid watches. If it's not the theme song randomly popping in your head, or the toy's you end up buying. Or actually realizing that it actually is a good show, you also make sure that your kid's see people that look like them on TV.

Representation matters there is absolutely no doubt about it, unfortunately avenues to include more representation are currently under attack by folks who don't love themselves so they hate everyone else. We must keep representation and what it mean's for kid's alive, so with that here modern cartoons featuring Black led characters for today's kid's to check out.

Craig Of The Creek

Craig Of The Creek was a standout favorite on the fall from grace cable channel that is the Cartoon network. Debuting in 2018, the show features the main character craig and his band of friends as they play at a nearby creek, using their vast imaginations to make the creek their own little world and navigating life in the process. The show just ended it's final season last month and went out with much fanfare.

Reruns still air on Cartoon network, and it is available on streaming services such Max and Hulu.

Motown Magic

This Netflix original is a favorite in my house and a genius idea in my opinion. Using the legendary music from Motown records and inspiration from cartoons such as The Magic School Bus. The series also debuting in 2018, follows a young boy Ben who stumbles upon a paintbrush that is magical in nature. It allows him to bring colorful art to life and through the power of Motown learn some lessons each episode.

While still available on Netflix, it only lasted two season's which is a shame because while several Motown favorites were played, there is a vault of classics that were never touched.

Doc Mcstuffins

The Doc is Here! Doc McStuffins the cartoon is well over 10 years old, debuting in 2012 yet kid's of today still love it. Dottie "Doc" McStuffins aspires to be a doctor like her mother, and with the power of his magic stethoscope and toys she brings to life she is able to start working towards that goal. Fixing toys from dolls to stuff animals healing them from their ailments. And as customary for most kid show's she learns important life lessons in every episode. 

The cartoon was a Disney Channel hit during it's original run which ended in 2020. I'm sure one of the Disney networks still air reruns, but it's available to watch on Disney plus and Hulu.

Ada Twist, Scientist

Another Netflix original Ada Twist, Scientist is a show in a similiar vain as Doc McStuffins. Debuting in 2021 the series follows the highly intelligent 9 year old Ada, full of imagination she has a book of scientific inventions and her own "magical' lab she can conduct experiments in. She also has three friends who are equally as smart by her side to assist in her science hijinks. 

The series focuses on the STEM field and imagination amongst kids. Encouraging them to persevere and not give up when something goes wrong the first time. There have been four season's of the show with the last one airing in 2023, it has not officially been cancelled by Netflix so hopefully more episodes are on the way. 

Lyla In The Loop

A PBS kid's production, Lyla In The Loop debuted last year on the network. It features a 7 year old girl named Lyla and her sidekick pet Stu, although no one really knows what kind of animal Stu is. Along with her family, Lyla and Stu navigate the life of a 7 year old in the city. Using critical thinking skills and her imagination, she innocently get's into mischief while also brainstorming her way out. Becoming a problem solver for those around her. Season 1 recently ended, so let's hope that season 2 is not far behind.

Karma's World

Another Netflix show that debuted in 2021, this one receives a lot of airtime in my house. Karma's World follows middle schooler Karma Grant who learns she has a skill of making good music. She also learns all the good music can bring to the world, while simultaneously learning about herself and gaining confidence. One of her song's Proud Of My Hair is quite infectious, you hear it and will be singing it to yourself for some days. While the show hasn't had any new episodes since 2022, hopefully new ones are being developed, in the meantime there is plenty of Karma's merchandise available in stores (trust me I know).

My Dad The Bounty Hunter

Netflix is really leading the pack here with cartoons featuring Black led characters. For kid's who love a good sci-fi adventure, this one is for them. My Dad The Bounty Hunter features brother and sister Sean and Lisa, while they are half earthlings they think their father is a typical boring dad. Until they accidentally catch a ride to one of his missions and find out he is a well known Bounty Hunter chasing down criminals of all species within the galaxy. It has some comedy and kid appropriate action scenes, as well as showing a loving Black family.

It debuted in 2023 and has 2 seasons before being cancelled by the streaming service. Which is a shame but there are still 19 episodes you can watch on repeat over and over again. 

Ariel

Based off the 2023 version of Ariel from Disney's Little Mermaid starring Hailey Bailey. This cartoon debuted on Disney Jr. last summer, and follows the misadventures of Ariel alongside her pals Sebastian and Flounder. Learning about the undersea life outside of her kingdom, and life lessons on how to treat other's and herself. It truly is just an updated version of the story for a new generation and hasn't changed much about the lore.

However if kid's today enjoyed the original Little Mermaid and the live-action remake, they will enjoy this one. While it has not been officially renewed by disney, I'm sure it will soon.

My Favorite Wayans Family Projects

 

This coming weekend the Wayans Family will receive the honor, of being inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. If there's any family in the entertainment world that deserves this honor, the Wayans Family is it. They have been making folks laugh for well over forty years and have created legendary projects. 

So it's time to give them their flowers and share my favorite projects created by The Wayans Family. I'm omitting In Living Color and I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, and My Wife & Kids because it's a given why those are favorites.

Second Generation Wayans

This 2013 BET original dramedy was actually pretty good. I just think it was not what viewers were expecting from members of the Wayans Family. Focusing on Damien and Craig Wayans who both wrote the series, trying to navigate Hollywood keeping the Wayans name going.

It focuses on the cousins lamenting that they have had achieved the success their uncles and aunt have. With a relatable story of trying to keep family legacies alive, while making your own mark. It's a shame it was only given one season.

Fifty Shades of Black

When released in 2016, this movie was given a lot of flak. Co-written by Marlon, it is however a very funny spoof, you would expect from a Wayans. It's silly, doesn't take itself too serious and is harmless. If you need a good laugh and have some time to kill give it a chance.

Marlon

Another sitcom in the long list of one's not given a chance, and cancelled too soon. Co-starring Essence Atkins (who now costars in Poppa's House with Damon and Damon Jr.), the two play a divorced couple trying to co-parent in the modern world.

A real topic inspired by Marlon's real life, the show touched on the seriousness of the subject but used laughter to heal it. Debuting in 2017 it was cancelled by NBC after it's second season.

Scary Movie 2

The sequel to the surprise hit of 2000 and released a year later. I personally find Scary Movie 2 funnier than the first one. Spoofing primarily the supernatural and haunted house genre of horror movies. The jokes in my opinion just land a bit better.

I didn't appreciate it when it released but it truly is a gem.

Damon Wayans Still Standing

To me Damon Wayans is the funniest member of The Wayans Family. And this HBO stand up special from 1997 shows why. For a hour Damon captives you with his storytelling, using the stage as a prop, there's not a dull second in his performance. His performance in this special shows how much of an art stand up comedy is, and how its been lost. Some of his material later is the basis for My Wife & Kids.

Blankman

Released in 1994 and co-written by Damon Wayans based on a story he developed. BlankMan is a silly ass movie if I'm being honest, but if I have an opportunity to watch it I will. It also was a early form of representation that went over my head as a child.

A Black superhero saving the city, but not just a Black superhero he's a "nerd" so to speak. So geek culture was on display in Blankman's alter ego Daryl, of course played over the top by Wayans. Daryl was also an inventor, handyman, computer whiz, and mechanic based on what he was able to build from junk. All components of the STEM field. 

While silly it has alot of heart and that makes it enjoyable.

Hollywood Shuffle

A lot of people don't know this, but Keenan Ivory Wayans co-wrote Hollywood Shuffle alongside Robert Townsend (another guy who deserves more flowers). The film follows an aspiring actor Bobby Taylor (played by Townsend) as he navigates the stereotypical world of Hollywood.

Wayans has a small role in the role, but it is a gem for how it is a satire on Hollywood back in the 80's. And much of the topics it covers and calls out is still relevant today.

Low Down Dirty Shame

Also released in 1994 Keenan Ivory Wayan's wrote, directed, and starred in A Low Down Dirty Shame. Playing a P.I. trying to get by who gets wrapped up in a case involving an old flame and foe. With Jada Pinkett Smith's character Peaches by his side, he sets out to close the case once and for all.

A homage to the Blaxploitation era of P.I.'s like John Shaft, I'm shocked a sequel was never made. The movie is funny enough to warrant one and still holds up today.

Major Payne

Major Payne a guy who's a pain in the ass. Released in 1995, 30 years later I can watch this movie beginning to end multiple times, like I have never seen it. The movie was co-written by Damon and it's just so funny with many quotable lines. And hasn't really aged as far as jokes being in bad taste or anything.

I know it's considered a cult classic, but I'm not sure how it is not a bonafide classic. Here's one of my favorite scenes and a collection of other funny ass scenes from the movie.

Mo' Money

Loosely based on the Mo'Money skits from In Living Color, Damon Wayans wrote and starred in this one with Marlon by his side. Playing brothers who hustle for a living, strongly opposed to working. Until Amber played by Stacey Dash catches Damon's character Johnny eye. Soon enough he has a job at her company and gets himself entangled in a credit card identity theft scheme.

It has comedy, and some action. And if if comes on TV or is available to stream and I have free time, I'm sitting down to watch it.

Don't Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood

I don't give a damn what anyone says Don't Be A Menace is the funniest spoof film ever, and the overall funniest movie by The Wayans Family. Released in 1996 it is a spoof of the 90's Hood movie genres, it targets and hits every movie from Boyz N The Hood on released up to that point.

Almost 30 years later I will watch it and laugh my ass off. Lines from the movie randomly pop in my head, so I have to quote them. It has alot of Easter eggs jokes you may miss, and things going on in the background to help drive jokes you may miss. 

For instance I never noticed until someone pointed it out on social media a few years back, that Ashtrays father had slip covers in his kitchen. The Wayans definitely took their time to make sure this movie was one of a kind and it shows.

How To Make It In America Gone Too Soon

 

This past weekend marked 15 years since a hidden gem on HBO debuted How To Make It In America. The show was one of those very under the radar gritty type shows that catered to a specific audience, with the most famous cast members being the guy who bagged Stifler's Mom in American Pie in Eddie Kaye Thomas, Luis Guzman who is one of those actors you see in movies and go oh him. And lastly rapper Kid Cudi, and the funny thing is these actors all played supporting roles. Two guys you likely never heard of in Bryan Greenberg and Victor Rasuk led the cast.

Set in New York City the series followed Greenberg's character Ben who is one of those guys who can't get out of his own way, he's an artist and is floating through life. Then there's his buddy Cam played by Rasuk, who is another guy floating through life hopping from one hustle to another. After a series of events that lead them to realize things aren't going right, they decide to start a clothing line focusing on jeans inspired by the 1970's that they dubbed Crisp.

What followed in subsequent episodes was a story of friendship, entrepreneurship, drive, hope, and the hustle needed to be successful. It was a relevant commentary on life in the 2010's and the young millennial drive to bet oneself and make something happen. The main characters were ambitious and yet naive, and at times in over their heads but didn't quit. 

The story, the characters and the vibe of the show made you care, but after season 2 ended on a high not both for the characters and the show with things looking on the up and up. HBO decided to unceremoniously cancel the show. And just like that everything it built was gone.
