Last Night at WWE Fastlane, Goldberg who is 50 years old and hasn't wrestled consistently since 2004 became WWE Universal Champion. What a crock of shit!! The power players in WWE (Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon,Triple H) all made a decision that I feel is one of the worst they could have ever made.
When Goldberg returned to the WWE last fall to face Brock Lesnar I understood the reasons why. Nostalgic purposes, marketing purposes to push the latest WWE game featuring Goldberg, and for Goldberg’s own personal reasons that he claimed. When Goldberg defeated Brock Lesnar in a minute and some change everyone knew it was leading to a rematch at Wrestlemania. That was fine no one expected much out of the match. Goldberg returns for Royal Rumble is one of the last entrants, gets eliminated, and a few weeks later challenges Kevin Owens for the Universal title.
When the match was announced I can’t name one person who was thrilled about this match. Fast Forward to FastLane, Goldberg vs. Owens no one expected a five star match, but we surely anticipated more. After several minutes of stalling, Chris Jericho made his return enough to distract Kevin Owens and allow Goldberg to hit the spear and jackhammer for the win. Talk about sucking the air out of something, the results only added to a dismal and already boring event.
I don’t know about you but I have no interest in seeing Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar for the WWE title. In a lot of ways both guys are similar, both are huge guys with relative quick speed for their size, they have been classified as dangerous workers at times, I think both are overrated, they can’t work long matches and both fell into wrestling and made a lot of money off it. I’m not mad at either for that, and Brock has more natural talent than Goldberg. Neither are worthy of a match where the title is on the line and both are part-timers who don’t have anything to gain from winning the Universal title.
Kevin Owens on the other hand is one of the best workers in the WWE at this time. He is athletic, play’s his part well, can make you love or hate him. He also has a habit of taking what is given to him and making the best out of it. His stint with Chris Jericho was very entertaining and it ran it’s course, turning him into the take no prisoners asshole he can be. Unless there is something big planned up WWE sleeve with K.O. all that went out the window when he lost to Goldberg.
This is just another example of the WWE sacrificing younger guys for the part-timers and legends and it has to stop. We all love a little nostalgia and seeing our favorite wrestlers come back for one more match is something that is always anticipated. In the grand scheme of things when they come back they need to help the next era keep the ball rolling and if not lose to them, put on enough of a show where the guy their facing will get enough of a “rub” to move to the next level. Part-timers coming back for Wrestlemania Season are fun for the most part, but not at the expense of the current roster.
